In recent years, the number of Bangladeshi migrant workers has seen significant growth, with over 500,000 Bangladeshis heading abroad for employment in just the first half of this year.
According to a report from Ami Probashi, a digital platform enhancing transparency in migration, this surge reflects a steady rise in demand for Bangladeshi workers across various industries globally.
The platform indicates that accounting has now entered the top 10 jobs for Bangladeshi migrant workers, with over 13,000 Bangladeshis working abroad as accountants between January and June.
Saudi Arabia is the most popular destination, employing 250,000 Bangladeshi workers, followed by Malaysia with 93,000 and Qatar with 39,000.
Of those migrating, nearly 150,000 traveled for jobs classified as “general skill type” which includes both skilled and unskilled roles.
The construction sector accounted for 63,000 Bangladeshi migrants, while factory work ranked third with 33,000 workers.
Skilled workers represented just over 10% of migrants, with 3.2% being professionals in industry-specific roles, such as software developers.
While migrant worker numbers increase every year, women’s participation has remained marginal at just 6%.
Dhaka and Chittagong were the most popular divisions of origin for migrant workers, providing 121,000 and 91,000 workers respectively.
Prospects for the second half of 2024 show signs of a growing labor market, particularly within Europe with the approval of 20,000 new visas in Italy during November.
