The Department of Environment, in its first-day crackdown on illegal polythene factories, seized 746kgs of bags and disconnected utility services.
During an enforcement raid in Dhaka's Kamrangirchar area, utility connections, including gas, electricity, and water were disconnected at one factory.
Thirteen mobile courts operated nationwide, targeting illegal storage and marketing of banned polythene. A total of BDT 180,500 in fines was imposed on 26 businesses on Sunday, according to the environment ministry.
Earlier, the environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced the government’s strong stance to implement the polythene bag ban with strict monitoring from November.
Additionally, at a meeting with environmental organizations at the Bangladesh Secretariat, the Environment Advisor announced that actions would also be taken soon against illegal battery-breaking and lead-smelting factories.
She emphasized that the government is taking progressive steps to curb all forms of pollution to protect nature.
