Normalcy returns to RMG sector as nearly all factories stay open

Normalcy has returned to the country’s readymade garments (RMG) sector as over 99.7% of factories remained operational on Wednesday, thanks to tensions diminishing largely at industrial zones in Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur, and Narayanganj.

On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) stated that 3 out of 871 factories were closed in Gazipur and Mymensingh while 2 out of 397 were shuttered in Savar, Ashulia, and Jirani regions. Besides, one RMG factory out of 301 was closed in the Dhaka DMP area.

All the factories in Narayanganj and Chattogram – numbering 200 and 350 respectively – stayed open throughout Wednesday, BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel informed this correspondent.

Anjuman Designers Limited in the Ashulia area and SM Knitwear Ltd in Gazipur were closed as per rule 13/1, according to the exporters.

He also informed that General Next Fashion Ltd in Ashulia and Niagara Textile Ltd Chandra of Gazipur were closed owing to outstanding salary payments for the months of August, and September respectively.

The apex apparel body claimed that 99.81% of factories had already paid their workers’ salaries for the month of August, and 94.10% of factories had paid the salary for September, Mohiuddin said.
