A total of 21 police personnel have been arrested in connection with the murder of Abu Sayed, who was shot dead during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Rangpur.
Inspector General of Police Mainul Islam shared the information at a press conference in Rangpur on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Mainul paid respects at the grave of Sayed, a 12-batch English department student of the Begum Rokeya University and coordinator of the movement.
Around 11am, Mainul arrived at Babanpur village in Madankhali union of Rangpur’s Pirganj Upazila. He laid flowers at Sayed’s grave and offered prayers.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali, the movement Coordinator Sarjis Alam, and other senior officials from the district and metropolitan police administration were also present.
The incident occurred on Jul 16, when Sayed was shot outside the university during a demonstration demanding quota reforms.
On Aug, Sayed's elder brother Ramzan Ali filed a case at the capital’s Tajhat Police Station, naming 16 individuals, including police officers, university administration, and teachers, as accused, along with 30 to 35 unidentified persons.
